Safety for all!

At KLM Gas, safety is our top priority. Safety to our customers, staff, our equipment, your installation and your pets are all included in our commitment to safety. To ensure safety at your property, it is expected that KLM Gas staff check for compliancy, disconnect and reconnect cylinders and test for leaks at each delivery. From time to time, you might need to check your own installation, below you will find clear, practical safety tips to help you use and check your cylinders with confidence. If you are ever unsure, we are always here to help.

Gas Leaks

Gas leaks can occur at any time and due to several factors such as faulty or old appliances, loose or damaged connections and/or incorrect handling/installation.  Generally, a leak is detected due to its pungent smell, or you may hear a hissing/whistling sound – either way, it is important that all suspected leaks are acted upon immediately.  If a leak is detected at delivery, a member of our team will contact you with details and assist in moving forward.  All leaks must be attended to by a licenced gas fitter as directed by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ).

Although hearing you have a suspected gas leak can be frightening, there are many actions that can be done for safety.

What To Do If You Smell Gas?

Gas is naturally odourless, therefore a very small amount of stenching agent similar to sulphur is added to LPG exclusively for the purpose of leak detection. Because this odour is so strong, you may at times smell gas when you are close to emptying a cylinder as the agent will settle at the bottom of the cylinder.

If you detect a gas smell:

  • Check if any pilot lights on your appliances have gone out
  • Check if the burners on your stove are accidently turned on
  • Spray the connections to your gas appliances and equipment with soapy water – If bubbles appear or you cannot confirm a leak, turn off your cylinder/s immediately and contact KLM Gas or a licensed gas fitter for assistance.

  • Turn off your gas and electric appliances, gas cylinders straight away
  • Open windows and doors to ventilate the area
  • Don’t light matches, or use lighters or open flames
  • Don’t smoke
  • Don’t use electrical appliances or phones and don’t switch on any lights
  • Move away from the source of the smell

Gas Compliancy

Another key aspect to Gas Safety relies heavily on gas cylinder location and ensuring all gas work is completed by a licensed Gas Fitter. However, sometimes changes are made to your property after the gas installation has been completed and we are frequently asked about the proper placement of gas cylinders. Therefore, it is important for all gas users to be knowledgeable on the following basic gas installation guidelines to keep you and your property safe.

  • Gas bottles cannot be placed close to wall openings, including windows, doors and vents, to preclude possible entry and collection of gas in enclosed spaces.
  •  Gas bottles must be a safe distance from openings to below ground spaces, for instance drains and pits, to prevent any possible build-up of the heavier than air LPG.
  • Ensure your installation point provides easy access during gas cylinder delivery and replacement and meets Australian Standards.
  • Solid and upright. Gas cylinders must be placed on a solid base made of a fireproof material like concrete or pavers and always kept upright. This will keep the gas cylinders stable and allow them to safely vent any excess pressure through their pressure relief valves.
  • No ignition sources. Gas cylinders must be kept a minimum distance away from ignition sources to reduce the risk of fire in the unlikely event of a gas leak, or during delivery when small amounts of LPG can escape into the air. Potential ignition sources include anything that carries electricity or a flame, like light switches, power points, air conditioning units, compressors, pumps, lights, motion sensors, security cameras, hot water heaters or BBQs.
  • Ventilation. Gas cylinders must be placed in well-ventilated areas avoiding locations under stairways, buildings, alcoves or enclosures to prevent stores of gas.
  • No building openings. To prevent an LPG leak entering buildings or accumulating in an enclosed space, cylinders must not be installed close to any wall openings like windows, doors or air vents.
  • No ground openings. As LPG is heavier than air and will sink to the ground if there’s a leak, you must keep gas bottles away from any ground openings like drains or pits.
  • Access. Your gas installation should provide ease of access during cylinder delivery and meet Australian Standards; this includes but not limited to stair and ramp construction
